A 3-tab shingle roof uses flat, single-layer asphalt shingles cut into three evenly spaced tabs, giving the roof a uniform brick-like pattern. It is the most affordable shingle style — but it is thinner, rated for lower wind speeds, and shorter-lived than the architectural shingles that have largely replaced it on new roofs.
How a 3-tab shingle is built
Each shingle is a single flat layer of fiberglass mat coated with asphalt and mineral granules, with two cut-outs creating three “tabs.” Because every shingle is identical and flat, the finished roof looks flat and uniform. Architectural (dimensional) shingles laminate two layers together, which adds weight, depth, wind resistance and years of life.

Is 3-tab ever the right choice?
Sometimes. If you are repairing a section of an existing 3-tab roof, matching the original shingle keeps the roof uniform. On a tight budget for a property you will not hold long — a rental or a flip — the lower upfront cost can make sense. For a home you plan to keep, the math favors architectural: the same labor cost, a small material premium, and 5–10 more years of service with roughly double the wind rating. Illinois straight-line winds regularly exceed 60 mph, which is exactly the edge of a 3-tab’s rating — a big reason the wind damage we document for insurance claims is so often on 3-tab roofs.

Frequently asked questions
Are 3-tab shingles being phased out?
Largely, yes. Several manufacturers have discontinued 3-tab lines because architectural shingles cost only slightly more while lasting longer and handling wind far better. 3-tab is now mostly used for small repairs and matching older roofs.
How long do 3-tab shingles last?
About 20-25 years by the manufacturer rating, but 15-20 years is realistic in the Illinois freeze-thaw climate. Their lighter, single-layer construction ages faster than architectural shingles.
Are 3-tab shingles cheaper than architectural?
Yes — typically 15-25% cheaper on materials. But because the labor cost is the same and architectural shingles last 5-10 years longer with better wind ratings, architectural is usually the better cost-per-year value on a full roof.
Can I put architectural shingles on a roof that has 3-tab?
Yes. On a full replacement the old shingles come off anyway, so you can switch styles freely. Mixing them on the same slope for repairs, though, will be visually obvious — repairs should match the existing shingle.
