Painting where the prep does the work
Interior walls, ceilings, trim and cabinets, plus exterior siding, soffit, fascia and decks — prepped properly and coated with products chosen for the Illinois freeze-thaw climate.
Why does exterior paint fail so fast here?
Almost always because it was applied over a surface that was not prepared. Illinois puts paint through freeze-thaw cycling, driving rain and strong summer UV. Paint applied over chalky, damp, glossy or unprimed surfaces lets go within a couple of seasons — not because of the paint, but because there was nothing sound for it to grip.
Prep is the unglamorous majority of a good paint job: washing off chalk and mildew, scraping and sanding failing edges, filling and caulking, spot-priming bare wood and stains, and masking properly. It is also the first thing a cheap quote quietly removes. When two painting quotes differ a lot, the difference is nearly always prep — and that is exactly the part you are paying for.
Interior and exterior work we take on
Whole-house repaints, single rooms, and the exterior details most painters skip.
- Interior walls and ceilings — including drywall patching and texture repair before coating.
- Trim, doors and finish carpentry — brushed and sprayed to a clean, hard finish.
- Cabinet refinishing — a fraction of the cost of new cabinets. See kitchen remodeling.
- Exterior siding and stucco — washed, prepped and coated for freeze-thaw.
- Soffit, fascia and gutters — the details that make an exterior look genuinely finished.
- Decks, porches and railings — cleaned, sanded and stained or sealed.
- Post-repair painting — finishing work after a remodel, or after storm or water damage.
What proper prep looks like
The steps that decide whether the finish lasts two years or ten.
- Wash and de-chalk — exteriors are cleaned so the coating bonds to sound material.
- Scrape, sand and feather failing edges so repairs do not telegraph through.
- Fill, caulk and seal gaps at trim, joints and penetrations — this also keeps water out.
- Spot-prime bare wood, repairs and stains so nothing bleeds through the finish.
- Mask and protect floors, furniture, landscaping, roofing and hardware.
- Two finish coats where the surface and colour change call for it — not one thin pass.
Painting questions
When is the best time to paint the exterior in Illinois?
Late spring through early fall. Most exterior coatings need surface and overnight temperatures to stay above roughly 50°F to cure properly, and the surface has to be dry. Interior work runs year-round.
How long does a house repaint take?
A typical interior room is one to two days including prep. A full interior is usually about a week. An average exterior repaint runs three to five working days, weather permitting — more if there is significant scraping, carpentry or siding repair.
Do you repair damaged surfaces before painting?
Yes — drywall patching, trim repair and rotten wood replacement are part of the scope, and they are itemised in the estimate so you can see exactly what you are paying for. As a full contractor we can also replace damaged siding rather than paint over it.
Do you protect furniture and landscaping?
Always. Interiors get floors and furniture covered and edges masked. Exteriors get landscaping, walkways, windows and roofing protected before any washing or spraying begins, and the site is cleaned at the end of each day.
