Storm restoration for the whole outside of your house
One storm rarely stops at the shingles. State Restoration Services repairs and replaces the roof, siding, gutters and windows it hit, priced on one estimate and built by our own crews.

What a storm marks on a house, and where you can see it
Stay off the roof. Hail loosens granules and wet shingles get slippery, so start with the first column and leave the second to our inspector.
From the lawn
- Dents in gutters and downspouts. Aluminum dents more easily than shingles, so they tell you hail was big enough to leave marks, and that the roof deserves a look.
- Cracked or split siding panels and chalky white impact marks, mostly on the wall that faced the storm. Our siding storm damage guide separates these from plain age.
- Panels that are loose or gone after high wind.
- Dinged AC fins and torn window screens.
- Cracked glass and storm-damaged windows.
From the roof
- Hail hits, counted and photographed slope by slope.
- Lifted, creased or missing shingles, which often sit where no one can see them from the street.
- Dented vents and bent flashing at the chimney and along walls.
- Damage on the slope facing away from your driveway.
From inside
- Ceiling stains under the attic, which you can trace back to the roof.
- Water on the walls below windows and skylights.
Who does what, from storm day to the last payment
Three parties are involved in most storm jobs, and each has its own work. Read your column first.

YouStay clear of downed lines, catch any drips, and photograph all four sides of the house. Bag a few hailstones if you can.

What Illinois law lets a roofer do
Illinois does not allow a roofing contractor to negotiate an insurance claim. If the two estimates are far apart or the claim is denied, our partner, the licensed Illinois public adjuster State Adjusting Services, can represent you with the insurer.
Scope settled
YouChoose your contractor. In Illinois the choice is yours, and it doesn't have to be a name from the insurer's list.
State Restoration ServicesGives you the schedule for the roof and siding in writing.
Your insurerDecides what it pays. Most policies send the actual cash value first.

A straightforward claim can go from report to finished work in a few weeks. A contested one commonly runs six to ten weeks, with negotiation, material lead times and weather counted in. Our guide to filing a storm claim in Illinois goes through the paperwork.

Why we photograph the walls that look fine
Storm damage gathers on the side that faced the wind or hail. Age shows evenly all around. Pictures of every wall put that contrast in front of the adjuster, and it's the plainest way to show which wall took the hit.
Most policies cover only the walls with functional damage, unless the policy has a matching provision. Ask about it before you assume the whole house is included. Often the honest answer is that one section is storm damage and another is just old.
Which crew goes first when everything was hit
Tear-off sends old shingles and nails down the walls, so new siding waits for the roof. With one contractor on the whole job, the wall joints are flashed once and the gutters come down and go up one time. See roof and siding in one project for how those joints get decided.
The bars show the order, not days. Siding on a typical house takes three to five working days once the roof is on, and the roof depends on its size and pitch.

When the storm only touched one part
You don't need the whole list. These are the pages for smaller jobs, and the inspection tells you which one is yours.

Questions about storm restoration
- What does a storm restoration contractor do?
- A storm restoration contractor inspects and repairs everything on the outside of the house that a storm hit, usually the roof, siding, gutters and windows. We photograph it, write a code-compliant estimate and build the work with our own crews.
- Is the storm inspection free if I never file a claim?
- Yes, it costs nothing and carries no obligation. The written report and photos stay with you, so you can read them first and decide afterward if a claim makes sense against your deductible.
- How long do I have to file a storm claim in Illinois?
- Your policy sets the limit, and most Illinois insurers allow one to two years. Call within days if you can, because damage gets harder to tie to a storm date as the months pass.
- Should I sign with the crew that knocks on my door after a storm?
- Not on the same day. Compare at least one other quote and look up the license first. Our page on storm chasers and local roofers explains how to tell them apart.
