Satellite Dish on Your Roof: Leaks, Starlink Mounts and the Holes Left Behind

Quick answer: A satellite dish on your roof is held by a foot plate lag-screwed through the shingles, and on most mounts sealant is the only thing keeping water out of those holes. Screwed into a rafter and sealed underneath, it can last. On the fascia, a gable wall or a yard pole, it leaves nothing on the roof to leak.

If there is a satellite dish on your roof, or a new Starlink you are deciding where to mount, this guide is about the part nobody sees from the street: what actually holds it up there, how that turns into a leak, where else it can go, and what to do with the holes when it comes down. The same questions apply to an over-the-air TV antenna on a mast.

Does a satellite dish on the roof cause leaks?

The dish itself does not; the holes that hold it do. A roof-mounted dish sits on a foot plate lag-screwed through the shingles and deck, and on most mounts sealant is the only barrier between those screws and your attic. When it dries out, or a screw that missed the rafter works loose in the wind, water follows the screw in.

Three things make a mount leak, and only one of them is age.

  • The sealant wears out. It was applied once, on installation day, and since then it has been through every summer and every freeze-thaw cycle on your roof. A pipe boot fails the same way, and our guide to roof pipe boot leaks covers that one.
  • A screw missed the rafter. A lag screw that hits a rafter is biting into solid framing. One that misses is holding in the roof deck alone, which is a sheet of plywood or OSB well under an inch thick. A dish catches wind, the screw rocks back and forth, the hole wears oval, and the seal breaks.
  • People walk on the roof to reach it. Every visit to re-aim a dish or knock snow off it is foot traffic on your shingles, and asphalt shingles are stiffer and easier to crack in cold weather. GAF lists "impact of traffic on the roof or foreign objects" among the things its shingle warranty does not cover.

The cable adds holes of its own. If it is held to the roof with clips that were nailed or screwed through the shingles, each clip is another fastener through the roof, and the cable then enters the house through a hole in the wall, the rim joist or the soffit.

The stain inside may not be directly under the dish. Water that gets in at a screw can run along the underside of the deck or down the side of a rafter before it drips, so the ceiling spot can show up a few feet downslope. If you can get into the attic, look at the underside of the deck directly below the dish on a rainy day. Dark staining on the deck around the screw locations is your answer.

How is a dish or Starlink supposed to be attached to a roof?

Into a rafter, with sealant pushed into the holes and laid under the foot, not only smeared around the edges afterwards. Starlink's own installation guide for its pivot mount spells this out step by step, and it is a fair description of how a roof mount should be done whoever makes the dish.

The Starlink Pivot Mount install guide lists two 3/8 in x 3.5 in lag screws, sealant tape squares, sealant tape strips and a 6 mm (1/4 in) drill bit for the pilot holes. Then, in order:

  • On where the holes go: "Place the holes directly over a structural beam to best secure your Starlink."
  • On sealing them: "Ball up the squares and push them into the holes, then apply the sealant tape over the holes."
  • On which way the mount faces: "The arrow on the mount should point up the slope of your roof."

The same document also says: "Starlink is not responsible for injury or damage to property caused by the installation process." That is standard language for a product guide, and it means a leak at the mount is not Starlink's to fix.

We think the instructions are sound. The weak points are the two things a printed guide cannot check on your roof. The first is whether the screws actually found framing. On a house, the "structural beam" is a rafter or the top of a truss, usually 16 or 24 inches apart, and it is hidden under the deck, so a pilot hole placed by guesswork can land between two of them. The second is how long sealant alone lasts. Sealant under the foot is better protected from the sun than a bead on top, but it is still the only barrier.

The longer-lasting version is a flashed mount: a metal flashing plate under the foot that slides up beneath the shingle course above it, so water running down the roof passes over the mount instead of depending on the seal. It is the same principle that keeps a pipe boot or a roof vent dry.

If there is a dish on your roof now, those four checks are the ones that tell you whether it was mounted properly. You can do most of them from the attic with a flashlight and from a ladder at the eave: a screw tip or a clean hole through the deck with no rafter beside it means a screw missed; shingle tabs lifted or cracked around the foot mean they have been stepped on or wind-lifted; and dark staining on the deck below the foot means water is already getting in.

Where else can a dish or Starlink go besides the roof?

On the fascia or a gable wall, on a yard pole, or on the ridge with a no-drill ballast mount. A TV dish needs a clear view to the south, where its satellite sits over the equator, and Starlink's app checks your sky for obstructions. If a spot off the roof gets a clean signal, there is nothing to leak.

The ridge option is Starlink's Ridgeline Mount: it straddles the peak and is held by ballast weights, and its install guide calls for no drilling at all, so there are no holes in the deck. The load still sits on your ridge cap, and placing or adjusting it still means someone walking to the top of the roof.

It is also worth trying the ground first. The standard Starlink comes with a kickstand, and the pivot-mount guide starts with removing it, downloading the app and finding a mounting location, all before anything gets drilled. If the kickstand in the yard or on a flat, secure surface gives you a clear enough view, the roof does not need to be involved.

What happens to the dish when you replace the roof?

It comes off before the tear-off and does not go back until the new roof is on. The timing is the useful part: tear-off day is the one time old holes disappear at no extra cost, under new underlayment and shingles. Decide before then whether the dish goes back on the roof, somewhere else, or away.

  • You no longer use it. Tell us before the crew arrives. The old mount comes off with the tear-off and its holes get covered by the new roof instead of being reused.
  • It is moving off the roof. Same result: the old holes vanish under the new roof, and the new mount goes on the fascia, a wall or a pole.
  • It is going back on the roof. Then the new holes are going into a brand-new roof, so it is worth getting them right. Tell your roofer where the dish will go. On tear-off day the rows of nails in the bare deck show exactly where the rafters run, which makes it the easiest time to find one.

If a storm is why the roof is being replaced, the dish is part of that job. It has to come off for the repair, so taking it down and putting it back belongs on the estimate with everything else. How should old satellite dish holes be sealed when the dish comes down?

Take the lag screws out, fill each hole with roofing sealant, then keep water away from it: slip flashing metal under the shingle with the hole, or replace that shingle. A dab of caulk on an empty hole is a temporary repair, and unscrewing the dish without sealing anything is worse than leaving it up.

The flashing repair works like this. The metal slides up between the damaged shingle and the one beneath it, far enough that the course above holds it, and it sits directly under the hole. Any water that gets through the hole lands on metal and runs out over the shingle below instead of into the deck. If the shingles around the old foot are cracked or torn, replacing those shingles is the better repair. This is a small repair, and it is the kind of thing we look at on a free roof inspection. If the roof is near the end of its life anyway, the cheaper plan can be to seal the holes properly now and let the old mount area go away with the tear-off when the time comes. Does a satellite dish void your roof warranty?

Not by itself. GAF's standard shingle warranty never mentions dishes; it covers manufacturing defects, and a leak at a drilled hole was never one of those. GAF's top-tier Golden Pledge warranty names them, excluding "damage to or caused by" rooftop satellite dishes. Either way the warranty stays in force, with the dish carved out.

The standard GAF Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty (RESWT160L) opens its exclusions with this sentence: "Even if your GAF Products were not properly installed according to GAF's application instructions or to standard good roofing practices, this limited warranty remains in effect." What it then excludes is damage from anything other than a manufacturing defect, including "impact of traffic on the roof or foreign objects" and "Damage to the interior or exterior of the building, including, but not limited to, mold growth." A leaking dish mount falls outside it without any special clause.

The Golden Pledge Limited Warranty (RESWT161L) is the one that also covers installation errors, and it is specific about what that includes. It covers "Misapplication of your GAF Products and flashings at valleys, dormers, chimneys, sidewalls, and plumbing vents (the Covered Flashings)". Then exclusion (8) reads: "Damage to or caused by rooftop air-conditioning units (and their flashing), pipe works, brace works, skylights, rooftop satellite dishes or other radio/TV devices, or flashings other than those specifically included above."

So the practical answer is the same under both: the rest of your roof keeps its coverage, and a leak at the mount is between you and whoever mounted it. Your roofer's own workmanship warranty is a separate document and may treat later penetrations by others differently, so read it before anyone drills. Can an HOA or village stop you putting a dish or Starlink on your roof?

Mostly not, on a roof you own. The FCC's Over-the-Air Reception Devices rule bars most restrictions that unreasonably delay installation, raise its cost or block the signal of a dish one meter across or smaller, Starlink included. It does not protect a mount on a roof the association owns, and in some townhome communities the association does own it.

The rule is 47 C.F.R. § 1.4000, and the FCC's consumer page on it is written in plain English. It covers a "dish" antenna "that is one meter (39.37") or less in diameter" designed to receive direct broadcast satellite service or "to receive or transmit fixed wireless signals via satellite". The same page defines fixed wireless signals to include those used "to provide telephone service or high-speed Internet access to a fixed location", which, on our reading of those two definitions, is how a satellite internet dish like Starlink falls under the rule alongside a TV dish. Antennas designed to receive local TV broadcasts are covered too.

  • No prior approval. "Local rules or regulations that require a person to obtain a permit or approval prior to installation create unreasonable delay and are generally prohibited." Legitimate written safety and historic-preservation requirements are the exception.
  • Placement preferences are allowed, within limits. An association can prefer the side or rear of the house if the preference is "clearly articulated in writing", does not cost you significantly more, and does not degrade the signal.
  • Tall masts are different. "Masts higher than 12 feet above the roofline may be subject to local permitting requirements for safety purposes."
  • Common areas are not covered. "The rule does not apply to common areas that are owned by a landlord, a community association, or jointly by condominium or cooperative owners where the antenna user does not have an exclusive use area. Such common areas may include the roof or exterior wall of a multiple dwelling unit."

Townhome owners, check this first. Whether the rule protects a roof mount depends on who owns the roof. In a condominium the roof is normally a common element, and in some townhome communities the association owns it too. If the roof is common property, a patio or balcony you have exclusive use of may be the spot the rule does protect.

The rule settles whether you can put the dish up. It says nothing about how the holes get sealed; that part is still on whoever drills them.

Frequently asked questions

Will my roofer put my satellite dish back after a new roof?

Usually not, and that includes us. Getting a TV dish back on signal means re-aiming it with a meter, so your provider does that part. We can take it down on request, but putting it back up and re-aiming it is theirs, so book them when you sign the roofing contract. With a Starlink, the app tells you whether it needs rotating once it is back on its mount.

Can I mount a Starlink on my roof without drilling?

Yes. Starlink sells a Ridgeline Mount that straddles the ridge and is held down by ballast weights instead of screws, so there are no holes. It still sits on the ridge cap and someone still walks the roof to place it. If the kickstand on the ground, a wall bracket or a yard pole gives a clear view of the sky, that keeps it off the shingles entirely.

Do I need a permit to put a satellite dish or Starlink on my roof in Illinois?

For a dish one meter or smaller, generally no. The FCC says rules requiring a permit or approval before installation create unreasonable delay and are generally prohibited, apart from legitimate safety or historic-preservation requirements. A mast more than 12 feet above the roofline may still need a local permit for safety reasons, so ask your village before putting up a tall one.

Is the dish covered if my roof is replaced on an insurance claim?

If a covered storm is the reason the roof is being replaced, the dish has to come off to do the repair, so taking it down and resetting it is part of the cost of that repair and belongs on the estimate. Whether the carrier pays that line is a claim question. Illinois law does not let a roofer negotiate it, which is where our affiliated licensed public adjuster comes in.
