When should you clean gutters in the fall? In the Chicago suburbs, the main fall clean goes in after the trees that hang over your roof are mostly bare, and before the gutters freeze for the season. The date on the calendar matters less than the trees above your house. This year that points to November for most yards from Arlington Heights to Mundelein, because in the third week of October the maples and lindens around here were still holding their leaves.
Clean too early and you pay for the job twice, or climb the ladder twice. Wait until the leaves in the trough have frozen into a block, and nothing comes out until a thaw, while the next snowmelt has nowhere to go. Below is how we read the trees and the thermometer to pick the week.
Where the trees and the thermometer stand this week
Two public sources tell you more about your gutters this month than any rule of thumb. We checked both on October 24, 2026.
The trees
The Morton Arboretum fall color report for Wednesday, October 21 described sugar maples and Freeman's maples in bright reds and oranges, and silver maples, lindens, hackberries, hickories and American elms in yellow.
Leaves in full color are still on the tree. The big drop comes after.
The thermometer
The National Weather Service in Chicago lists October 19 as the normal date of the first 32 degree night at O'Hare, based on 1991 to 2020.
So the normal first freeze has already passed this year, and the canopy is still up.
That combination is common here, and it is why "clean before the first freeze" is bad advice in our area. Follow it literally and you clean a gutter that is about to fill up again.
The trees over your roof set the date
Stand in the driveway and look at what actually hangs over the roof edge. A tree two lots away barely matters. The one whose branches reach over your eaves decides when the clean is worth doing and what you will find in the trough.
| Tree over the roof | What ends up in the gutter | When it lets go | What it does in a gutter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maples (sugar, silver, Freeman's) | Wide, flat leaves, and in spring the winged seeds | Leaves fall in the weeks after their color peaks, which this year was the second half of October | Leaves lie flat, stack up and seal over the downspout opening. Spring seeds pack into the outlet. |
| Lindens | Heart-shaped leaves and small seed clusters | Around the same time as the maples | Soft leaves turn to a wet mat fast, which holds water in the trough |
| Honeylocust | Tiny leaflets and long seed pods | Turns early in fall | Leaflets are small enough to slip through the openings of some guards and settle as sludge. Pods lodge across the outlet. |
| Oaks | Tough, leathery leaves and acorns | Last of all. Many hold some leaves through winter and drop them in spring. | Leaves break down slowly, so they ride down to the outlet and jam it |
| Pines and spruces | Needles and cones | A little all year | Needles knit into a mesh that catches everything else |
The oak row is the one that throws people off. Illinois Extension explains that oaks often hold on to their dead leaves through winter, more so on young trees and on the lower branches of older ones, and let them go in late winter or early spring. If you wait for the oak to go bare before the fall clean, you may be waiting until April.
Why one frosty night is not the deadline
A single night at 30 degrees does not freeze a gutter full of leaves into a brick. What does is a stretch of days that stay below freezing while the trough is already full of wet debris. The O'Hare record shows how wide the spread is from year to year:
- September 22, 1995The earliest first freeze on record at Chicago.
- October 19The normal date of the first 32 degree night at O'Hare.
- November 9, 2025Last year's first freeze, at 26 degrees.
- November 24, 1931The latest first freeze on record, at 30 degrees.
In practice, the window for the fall clean in the north suburbs runs from the week your trees go mostly bare until the gutters freeze up for the winter. In a year like this one, that is a few weeks in November. The risk of missing it is not abstract. Leaves frozen in the trough hold meltwater at the roof edge, and that is how a clogged gutter helps build ice along the eaves. Our guides on why gutters and downspouts freeze and on how ice dams form on Illinois roofs go through what happens next.
If the gutters have already frozen with leaves inside, do not chip at them from a ladder. Wait for a thaw and a dry day. A frozen trough on a frosty ladder is the wrong job at the wrong time.
One fall visit or two, by the yard you have
Our standing advice for most homes here is a clean in late spring and one in late fall, and three a year under mature oak, maple or pine. On real lots it works out like this:
- Newer subdivision, young trees, nothing over the roof
- One clean after the neighborhood trees are bare. Most of what lands in the gutter is blown in, plus shingle grit.
- Big maples or lindens over the eaves
- One clean once they have dropped, which this year means November. If a hard rain is coming before then and the gutters already overflow, a quick clear of the outlets and downspouts buys you the weeks until the drop.
- Oaks over the roof
- A fall clean when everything else is bare, then a spring clean after the oak leaves come down. The spring visit matters more on these lots than anywhere else.
- Pines or spruces next to the house
- Needles fall all year, so the late-fall clean plus the spring one, and a look after any big windstorm.
What we do on a late-fall visit
On a gutter cleaning visit we clear each run by hand, flush every downspout, and check that the gutters still fall toward their outlets and that the hangers hold. Late fall is the visit where that last check pays off: a sagging section that holds a puddle in November holds a slab of ice in January. Everything we pull out is bagged and hauled away, and you get a photo report.
Because we are on a ladder at the roof edge anyway, the report also covers what we can see of the shingles, flashing, fascia and soffit. A lifted shingle or a soft spot in the fascia is far cheaper to deal with in November than after a winter of ice. If the gutters themselves are past saving, that goes in the report too, with a price for new one-piece aluminum gutters.
Rather do it yourself from the ground? Our piece on cleaning gutters without a ladder matches the tool to the kind of debris you have.
Gutter guards change the date, not the job
With guards on, the fall visit turns into a check. Leaves stay mostly on top, where wind and rain move a good share of them along. Fine grit, shingle granules and honeylocust leaflets still get through, though, and a wet mat of maple leaves sitting on a guard can send rain straight over the front edge. Once the trees are bare, look along the top of the guards and run water down each downspout. Our honest take on whether gutter guards are worth it in the north suburbs covers which kinds hold up under our trees.
Frequently asked questions
Is late October too early to clean gutters in the Chicago suburbs?
In most years, yes, if big maples, lindens or oaks hang over your roof. On October 21, 2026 the Morton Arboretum still reported sugar maples in full red and orange and silver maples and lindens in yellow, so most of those leaves had not come down yet. A clean done before they drop gets refilled within a couple of weeks. The exception is a house with heavy summer debris already packed in the gutters: clear it now so the fall rain can drain, then plan the main clean after the drop.
Can gutters be cleaned after the first frost?
Yes. One night at or below freezing does not lock anything up. The first 32 degree reading at O'Hare normally comes around October 19, and last year it came on November 9, while the trees above most houses were still dropping leaves. What stops a cleaning is a run of days below freezing with wet leaves already in the trough, because then the debris freezes into a solid block that has to thaw before it will come out.
My oaks still have leaves in December. What then?
Many oaks, especially young ones and the lower branches of older trees, hold their dead leaves through winter and drop them in late winter or at spring bud break. Do the fall clean when the rest of the yard is bare, then plan a spring clean after those oak leaves come down, so the gutters are open before the spring rains.
Do gutter guards mean I can skip the fall clean?
They change it from a full clean to a check. Guards keep most leaves out of the trough, but fine grit, shingle granules and small leaflets still get through, and leaves can sit on top of a guard and push water over the edge. Look at the top of the guards and flush each downspout once the trees are bare.
